I’m officially back from Paris and settling back into my life here in Chicago! Can you believe it’s already December? I just looked at my calendar this morning and realized that the new year is exactly 4 weeks away.
What a year 2014 has been! I love this time of the year because it’s a chance to look back on what was great about the past year, while also getting excited about the amazing things to come in the new year.
The good news is that whether or not your life changes is totally up to you! It’s all in your hands. You have the freedom to create the life you really desire. You can decide to listen to that inner quiet voice and be courageous. You can acknowledge the fear and just go for it! You can believe everything is yours to have, do, or be.
The beauty of a new year is that it’s a clean slate, which means the chance for a whole new experience.
So in that spirit, I thought I’d share with you one of my favorite exercises for cherishing the year that’s past and visioning the year to come.
Give yourself some space and time to do this exercise. Grab a journal. Light a candle. Pour yourself a hot cup of tea or a glass of wine. Get comfortable!
Reflect back on 2014…
Sometimes it helps to look at your calendar to trigger your memory. Think about bigger events during your year – vacations, big birthdays, maybe a promotion or a new love – but also consider the smaller things too like reconnecting with an old friend or that perfect day at the beach.
Was 2014 the year you wanted?
What are you proud of in 2014?
What lessons did you learn that you’re bringing to the new year?
Now focus on the coming year…
Think backwards. One year from now – 365 days – what are you going to wish you had done? What are you doing to wish you had created?
What will your life look like in 2015?
How can you be more courageous in this new year?
How do you want to feel each day? (Here’s a fantastic tool for a deeper dive into this question.)
What experiences do you want to have?
Who will you become in 2015?
