This week we’re talking about support. The fact is that we all need to feel supported. You’ve probably been on an airplane and been advised to put your own oxygen mask on first before you help your loved ones with theirs, right? Well, this same concept applies in life overall. First and foremost, we have to find support and care for ourselves.
But what does this actually mean to get support and how does it translate into our daily lives?
So often we get to this place where we put everyone else’s needs before our own. We end up giving way too much and feel like we don’t get enough back in return. When you are constantly giving away what is in your cup and not refilling it, you end up having nothing left to give. And the result is that you suffer. You’re left feeling rundown, frustrated, and resentful.
Self-care is critical to your well-being, and to your ability be present for the people and things that are important to you. This is why self-care isn’t just this luxury for “other” people, it’s crucial for all of our well-being. Do you want to be a more present, available parent, friend, spouse or employee? The first step is to take time for you.
Think about it. When you feel refreshed from some relaxation time or maybe a day off, aren’t you so much more joyfully available to give back to others? Your cup is full again and you have much more to offer to those around you.
In that spirit, this week’s exercise is all about taking care of you first.
What is one way you can take time for yourself to recharge this week?
What this looks like is different for everyone. It depends on what your needs are. Maybe it looks like getting a relaxing massage or manicure. Or maybe it means scheduling a dinner with friends for some connection time. Or it might mean getting a good book, some tea and sitting in the bookstore and just enjoying the pure luxury of reading. If you’re feeling overwhelmed at home, you might hire someone to clean your house or do your grocery shopping, so that you can add some down time back in to your life.
Take a moment and think about what you really need this week. Is it connection, relaxation, inspiration? Something else? Decide what it is and commit to giving it to yourself this week!
