One of the most common things I hear from people is “I feel stuck.” They express that they have this desire to change the world. To show up as their authentic selves and to do big things. They want to feel calm and happy and live the life of their dreams. But yet, they aren’t doing what they know they should be doing to show up in this way.
One of the reasons for this is that we all have deep seeded patterns, beliefs and emotions about ourselves that effect the way we perceive the world, and block us from making any really change. As a coach, I help my clients to identify these blocks and move past them.
I have an easy way for you to get yourself unstuck today, and it has to do with actually MOVING your body. Often times – I’ve seen this happen with many of my clients in coaching and acupuncture – getting our physical body unstuck can have a huge impact on our mental and emotional selves too. Remember, it’s all connected!
In acupuncture and Chinese medicine, we have what we call Qi (pronounced “chee”) coursing through our bodies. There’s no direct equivalent in Western medicine, but the easiest way I’ve come up with to explain Qi is that it’s the life force energy in our body that makes everything work. When we have the right amount of Qi coursing through our body we feel good and healthy. But when we don’t have enough or our Qi gets stuck, we start to feel off. It’s really common for people to have Qi that is stuck and needs to be moved. This is an oversimplified explanation, but hopefully you get the idea that healthy flowing Qi energy is vital to feeling good!
Here are a couple of ways to get your Qi moving to you help feel unstuck…
Move Your Body. Exercise and basically just get your body moving. Take a walk. Take a yoga class. It doesn’t have to be strenuous. In fact if you’re feeling stuck and tired, it’s best to just do something light. But if you’re the type of person who feels better after exercise, you can go for something more intense like running, weights or a spin class.
Breathe. Yep, it’s as simple as breathing! Taking big, deep breaths that fill your belly will get your Qi moving. Ever wonder why we sigh? It’s because the energy in our body is stuck and sighing is our body’s natural way to trying to get more oxygen and improve the energy flow.
Here is a breathing exercise you can do several times throughout the day to move your energy:
Start by breathing in for 3 seconds, then hold it for 3 seconds and then exhale for 3 seconds. Do this 5-10 times in a row. Work your way up from 3 to 6 seconds. You can do this as many times as feel comfortable to you throughout the day. You’ll be amazed at how your energy improves!
