As humans, we’re always going to have good and bad things happening in our lives. It’s the nature of life. And while we can’t always control what happens around us, the good news is that we can choose what we focus on. And better yet we get to choose how we perceive what’s going on around us.
“It’s not the events of our lives that shape us, but our beliefs as to what those events mean.”
When we start to focus on the good in life and every situation you start to find that more good and more joy start to show up and become your new normal.
One way to do this is by intentionally adding joyful activities into your life!
When we only focus on the negative of life it drains us of our self worth. If we stay stuck in our lower level feelings of fear, guilt and depression, we’re blocked from our inner selves. Over time this can become a habitual way of being, and it can be hard to break.
The key is to be intentional about adding joy to our lives – choosing activities that make us happy and honor who we are. If we can find ways to add in the good everyday vs focusing on the bad, we end up naturally eliminating our negative habits. What happens is that we start to notice that the good stuff really makes us feel better, and this realization leads us to make better and healthier choices.
Here’s an exercise to get going on this…
Do one thing today that brings you joy and makes you feel good! It can be as simple as reading the paper with a delicious cup of coffee or maybe taking the day off and going to the spa!
Here are some of my favorite ideas:
- Get a manicure.
- Call a girlfriend to catch up and re-tell your old stories.
- Seek out the best pastries in your city or town and savor every bite!
- Take your dog for a long walk in the woods or nearby park.
- Indulge in a great book. Maybe a juicy novel or an intriguing biography?!
- Cook a beautiful, healthy, and delicious gourmet meal
