I often hear people talking about how they desire adventure but are too stuck in fear to actually take the first step and do anything. I think it’s because when we focus on the end result and worry about failing or not doing it right or good enough, we stop ourselves before we even get the chance to start. And the sad thing is, when this happens, we deprive ourselves of the opportunity to actually have the experience!
To me the joy and thrill of adventure is really about the experience. And when we open ourselves up to the feeling, and just experience the moment, it’s much easier to let go of the fear and actually take action.
So here’s my exercise for you this week:
What do you desire? As we’ve discussed previously, getting grounded in what we actually desire is the first step. Once you’re clear on what you want, then use the following as a guideline. Whatever your desire is, you’re probably going to feel some amount of fear. And when you do, it’s time to check in with yourself and determine your level of desire versus fear.
If 80% of you wants it, but 20% of you is feeling scared, then listen to the 80%. Your desire is definitely outweighing the fear that’s coming up, and you should be able to move through it. Now for the flip-side: if 20% of you wants it and 80% of you is scared or resistant, then it’s probably a no-go, at least for right now. At this stage, you most likely won’t have the fire inside to make it happen.
Here’s an example from my own life when I took my trip to Paris last fall. I had a burning desire to go, but I certainly was feeling fearful as well. But, when it came down to it, my desire far out-weighed my fear, which gave me the “no matter what” attitude and I was able to make it happen.
Here’s another example when it went the other way for me. I recently started planning a big project in my business. As I got going on it, I was really having some resistance around doing the work to make it happen. I could tell that something was off. And when I finally got clear that I was hovering in the 20% space of desire and 80% fear and resistance, I made the decision to redirect and do something different.
So take some time to figure out what you desire and then see where you land on the desire versus fear/resistance scale. If your desire is closer to the 80%, tap into the experience of what you want (remember, not the end result) and go for it!!
And don’t worry, if you discover that your fear and resistance is dominating the 80%, it’s totally ok. Allow it time and space and it will shake out. You may end up making some changes to your original desire or something totally new may emerge. Either way, something exciting is on the horizon, so be open to the possibilities!
In love and freedom,
