Ok, we’re in the home stretch of this long winter and hope and warmth is within reach! We had a day this week here in Chicago that was still really cold, but something about the sun just felt different. More powerful maybe? It ignited such an uplifting feeling in me. It was almost like I could taste that relief was close!
I felt myself stand up a little taller and could feel myself glowing. And it got me thinking about the things we can all be doing to glow, no matter what’s going on “out there.”
Remember, everything is connected. So this means that nourishing our spirit, emotions and physical body all contribute to our glow. And I believe the glow comes from within. Yes, we need to take care of our skin, but no amount of facial cream or magic product can mask when we’re filling our bodies with junk – whether that be food, information or negative thoughts.
So, here are four things to add to your toolbox to help you shine like you’re meant to!
- Dry brush your skin
Yep, literally. The skin is our largest organ so it’s important to keep it healthy. Dry brushing loosens dead skin cells, improves circulation and moves your lymph all while stimulating your immune system. From an acupuncture perspective, it can also stimulate the meridians or acupuncture points so it’s a lot like giving yourself an acupressure massage. And, it makes your skin soft and glowing!
You can get a natural bristle brush at any health food store or buy exfoliating gloves from any drugstore. Here’s how to do it: before you get in the shower when your skin is still dry, start at your feet and brush your skin in circular motions up the body to your neck and shoulders. I personally don’t dry brush my face, but the choice is all yours.
- Eat at least one raw meal a day
I know earlier in the winter I discussed being careful how much raw food we’re consuming in the cold weather as it’s too harsh on your digestive system. You can read that blog here. But as we move into spring, our bodies can better handle raw food. I like to eat at least one raw meal per day. It keeps my energy feeling light and my skin glowing. What do I mean by raw? Simply food that is not cooked. You can make a delicious salad or get fancy and research raw food recipes and go crazy! This also means juices and smoothies! Be sure to get the most benefits from these by keeping them to 50% vegetables and 50% fruit.
- Release negative thoughts
Again not a new topic for us, but I think it’s always a good reminder! When we are constantly thinking negative thoughts about ourselves, those around us and our lives, it weights us down and dulls our shine. Go back and read this blog for an exercise on getting rid of negative thoughts.
Take a few minutes each morning to actually visualize yourself shining. It’s simple and feels so good!
Here’s how to do it: Get comfortable and close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths. Visualize a fountain of white light bubbling in your lower abdomen. Then picture this white light spreading throughout your whole body: down your legs, up your torso, down your arms and into your head. Finally, focus on the white light in your heart center (the space in the middle of your chest where you feel love and joy). Breathe into this space and let the white light build itself into a huge ball. Then, picture your day ahead and extent this light on every task, every event and every person you meet. Visualize everything in your day going smoothly and perfectly. Take a couple more deep breaths and go and have a beautiful day!
