Summer is here, my darlings! It’s a time filled with abundant energy, long days and lots of sunshine. Summer is a time of expansion, growth, activity and creativity. In Chinese Medicine the summer element is fire, the organ is the heart and the emotion is joy!
When the fire element is in balance, the heart is strong and healthy. The mind is calm and sleep is sound.
When the fire element is imbalanced however, we may either lack joy (depression) or have an excess of joy (mania). Indicators of an imbalance in the fire element include agitation, nervousness, heartburn, and insomnia.
So today, I’m giving you some tips to keep yourself balanced during the summer months:
- Change your sleep patterns.
Wake and rise with the sun. Take a mid-day nap if needed. You may not know this, but we don’t need as much sleep in the summer. This is because the natural fire in our body is at the surface, which allows us to have more natural energy.
- Stay hydrated.
It’s important to drink water throughout the day and not wait until you’re thirsty, which is a sign that you’re already dehydrated. Another great way to keep your fluids up is to eat watermelon or drink watermelon juice. Think of it as a natural form of Gatorade.
- Eat lighter foods.
Now is the time to add in some raw foods into your diet. You still want to eat mostly lightly cooked foods, but your body is able to handle cold and raw foods better during the summer. Focus on eating fish and seafood if you’re not a vegetarian and stay away from heavy and greasy foods. Since this time of year is all about upward movement and growth, you want to be sure not to weigh yourself down with too much food. Now is also a great time to put cucumber in your water!
- Get your bare feet in the grass.
It’s energetically grounding to connect our physical bodies in touch with the earth. If we think about summer time as being upward and outward expansion but we tend towards anxiety and restlessness, then focusing on things that ground our energy makes sense. Taking your shoes off and walking in the grass is one of the most effective and quickest ways to anchor our energy.
- Avoid overworking.
While summer is a time to get out and be active and experience the world…it’s important to also protect yourself from heat exhaustion. In addition to proper hydration and nourishment, know your body’s boundaries and what you’re capable of doing. If you’re looking to exercise outside this summer, do so in the morning or evening, which tend to be cooler times. Take cool baths and showers. Balance being outside with also being in cooler environments, like the water or the shade. It’s best for our bodies to gradually build up to handling the heat again.
Tap into your creative juices – your joy and your desires. Now is the time where we can more easily access our creativity and desires, so take advantage of this energy! Set-up dates with friends to discuss what you’re craving out of life. Give each other the time and space to be heard and help keep each other accountable on taking inspired action.
